Birmingham police report violent crime down in 2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department is reporting what they call a significant reduction in violent crime across the city last year.

According to BPD, the department recorded 72 chargeable homicides in 2025, a 43% decrease compared to the previous year.

11 cases were ruled justifiable by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, 2 cases were officer involved shootings and 2 other cases were ruled accidental.

BPD said it achieved a 87.3% homicide clearance rate in 2025, which means most of the homicide cases were solved through arrests or case closures…
