Birmingham leads charge in campaign donations for Alabama’s next governor

Birmingham led the fundraising push for Alabama’s governor’s race in December, as cash poured in from the Magic City into both the top campaigns.

In-state donations have fueled the campaigns for both U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R, and former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, D. Residents from Birmingham specifically have given more money to both campaigns than those from any other city. That’s according to campaign finance records both candidates filed with the Alabama Secretary of State for the month of December.

Jones raised more money in December than Tuberville, though Tuberville got a six-month head start, ahead $9 million already. Last month, Jones fundraised a total of $482,798, the first full month of his campaign since its launch at the end of November.

He brought in nearly $120,000 from Birmingham. Other top cities were Homewood ($28,900), Huntsville ($12,161), Shoal Creek ($10,000), and Mountain Brook ($6,900)…
