2 adults dead, 3 children injured in crash with train after driving van around railroad crossing arm

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) – Two people were killed and three children injured after the minivan they were in was struck by a train in Alabama on Friday morning.

Carolyn Elaine Berry, 47, and 36-year-old Aldereka Laqulla Ikes, both of Birmingham, were pronounced dead at the crash scene on 24th Street Southwest, authorities said.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the vehicle was driven around the railroad crossing arm before it was hit.

There were also four children in the minivan at the time. Three of them were taken to Children’s of Alabama Hospital for treatment, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue. There was no word on the severity of their injuries…
