Birmingham homicides drop 42% as city highlights community violence intervention efforts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Birmingham officials say a sharp decline in homicides is tied in part to prevention efforts happening long before police are ever called.

City leaders and the Urban League of Alabama shared progress Thursday on a Community Violence Intervention pilot program designed to stop shootings before they happen. The program operates in Birmingham’s 35204 ZIP code, one of the city’s neighborhoods most impacted by gun violence.
