I-Team looks into probe involving ex-UAB officers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — Two former UAB police officers are out of a job as an investigation into the alleged misuse of a national law enforcement database unfolds — with one officer now charged, his attorney defending his innocence, and the ABC 33/40 I-Team continuing to press for answers.

The officers, identified as Johnny Fowler IV and Solomon Moss, were reportedly under investigation for the alleged misuse of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system — a nationwide FBI-operated database that gives law enforcement real-time access to information about stolen vehicles, wanted persons and other criminal justice data.

Investigators are examining whether the system was improperly used to identify vehicles that were later stolen and transported to so-called “chop shops” — illegal operations where stolen cars are dismantled for parts, stripped of valuable materials or altered to avoid detection…
