‘A disaster starts local and ends local’: Tornado recovery efforts continue years later

FULTONDALE, Ala. (WBMA) — When tornadoes tear through a community, the damage is immediate and visible — splintered homes, uprooted trees and emergency crews working around the clock.

What is less visible is what happens in the months and years that follow.

In Fultondale, the impact of both the April 27, 2011 tornado and the January 2021 tornado is still present. Some properties remain vacant. Some homes were never rebuilt. And for many residents, recovery continues long after the debris is cleared…
