Birmingham physicians urge adults to screen for colon cancer as rates raise in those under 50

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) — March marks Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and Physicians at Birmingham Gastroenterology are urging Alabamians to get screened at the recommended age due to rising rates of colon cancer in adults under 50.

According to the American Medical Association, cases of colon cancer in adults ages 20-49 have steadily increased over the past 20 years.

“Colon cancer should no longer be considered a disease that only affects older adults,” managing partner at Birmingham Gastroenterology Dr. Rajat Parikh said in a statement. “The continued rise in cases and deaths among people younger than 50 is deeply concerning and highlights the importance of early screening.”…
