UAB pulmonologist discusses health impact of daylight saving time

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Many Americans will lose an hour of sleep this weekend as clocks spring forward for daylight saving time, and doctors say the shift can temporarily affect our health.

While many people enjoy the longer daylight hours in the evening, sleep experts say the sudden change can disrupt the body’s natural rhythm.

“We tend to not be as alert as we normally are. We tend to not be as good with our mental performance,” said Dr. Neal Daniel, a pulmonologist with UAB St. Vincent’s. “And all of these are some of the reasons that, for instance, car accidents go up right after the time change.”…
