Scam texts hit thousands in two Alabama counties

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – If you received a text message this week claiming you owe a traffic fine at the Alabama Department of Vehicles, heads up – it was a scam.

City leaders in Tuscaloosa said their municipal court took more than 50 phone calls this week from concerned neighbors – and Tuscaloosa wasn’t alone.

The scam comes in the form of a text, threatening anyone with prosecution and a hit on your credit score. The sender claims it’s from the Alabama Department of Vehicles, or DMV. The problem – such an entity doesn’t exist in Alabama…
