Remembering Brookwood Village as the iconic Alabama shopping mall is torn down

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — As demolition crews are days away from tearing down Brookwood Village in Homewood, we at CBS 42 wanted to look back on memories of the longtime mall before it’s gone.

The mall, which was first built in 1974, was home to many different businesses over the years, from Alabama’s first Chick-fil-A franchise to Rich’s department store and others. At the end of 2024, Five Guys was the last shop to move out of the mall, leaving a ghost mall in its wake.

Although there are some developments in the works on the property, such as the new Andrews Sports Medicine facility, what was once one of the Birmingham area’s premier shopping centers will be nothing but a distant memory.
