Over 200 employees to be impacted by ‘idled operations’ at 2 east Alabama mills

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Domtar, a “leading North American manufacturer of diversified forest products”, announced they will “indefinitely idle operations” at two of their mills in east Alabama, impacting over 200 employees.

According to Domtar, operations will idle at their Coosa Pines fluff pulp mill and their Talladega chip mill by mid-May 2026.

The Coosa Pines mill is located along the Coosa River and began operations in 1950, according to Domtar’s website. It was originally a joint venture between Kimberly-Clark and newspaper publishers and for many years, the mill produced newsprint for publishers located in the Southeastern United States.

In 1976, fluff pulp was added to the Coosa Pines mill’s product offering with the installation of a new kraft line, a recovery boiler and a pulp dryer. In 2000, a $63 million upgrade was finalized. As of 2026, the mill reportedly produces kraft pulp used worldwide and is considered a leading manufacturer of pulp used in tissue and absorbent consumer products, according to Domtar…
