State bill would more than double Birmingham mayor’s salary, change how it’s set

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Senate Bill 375 could dramatically change how the Birmingham mayor’s salary is determined and significantly increase it.

The mayor’s pay is currently not set locally. This is the only city in Alabama which operates this way. It is outlined in state law specific to Birmingham because the city is the state’s only Class 1 municipality.

Under that structure, the mayor’s salary was originally set at $68,000 in the city’s mayor-council act. Lawmakers later passed a 2008 law requiring a $40,000 increase for mayors in Class 1 cities — bringing the current salary to $108,000 a year…
