Case against former Jefferson County deputy charged with drunk crash goes to grand jury

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The case against a former Jefferson County deputy who isaccused of crashing her patrol car while intoxicated has been sent to a grand jury.

A CBS 42 investigation showed video of the moment former Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Shamonte Lanfair ran a red light and crashed into a car driven by Kayla Williams. Williams’ little brother Nicholas was also in the back seat.

Investigators say Lanfair was intoxicated at the time. She was arrested and charged with two counts of assault first-degree DUI. Lanfair waived a pre-trial hearing Monday. That means a grand jury will hear evidence from the prosecution and decide if the charges she’s facing will proceed.
