Alabama veterans reflect on sacrifice made by 3 local soldiers killed in Iraq

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — Hundreds gathered in Trussville to remember the life of Maj. John “Alex” Klinner on Monday. He was one of the six service members killed in the line of duty in Iraq earlier in March.

Three members of the 99th Air Refueling Squadron were killed when their aircraft crashed in Iraq. Some veterans said there’s a saying “freedom isn’t free,” and they say the sacrifices these soldiers made are the picture of that saying.

“It was in the western part of Iraq, up in this area, is where open sources say that the crash site was,” said retired Air National Guard Col. Scott Grant.
