“Can’t get in or out” East Birmingham rail plan advances, but relief still years away

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Frustration is growing among residents on Birmingham’s east side who say blocked train crossings continue to disrupt daily life, even as city leaders move forward with a long-discussed plan to address the issue.

The Birmingham City Council this week approved funding for the design and engineering phase of a rail safety project aimed at reducing blocked crossings between the Woodlawn neighborhood and the city of Trussville.

The effort is tied to an $8 million federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant awarded to the city in 2022. The project calls for closing several at-grade railroad crossings and creating alternative routes to improve safety and traffic flow…
