Alabama megachurch leaders say conflict dragged out for years before pastor resigned

Leaders of a 7,800-member megachurch in Vestavia Hills are trying to explain what happened and reassure the congregation after the senior pastor resigned this month with vague explanations.

Nine leaders of the church, including executive staff, deacons and committee leaders, took the stage at Shades Mountain Baptist Church on Wednesday night trying to add clarity to a situation that left many in the congregation confused after Senior Pastor George Wright III announced his resignation on May 1 after less than five years.

In his final sermon on May 3, Wright implied there had been a leadership dispute similar to Paul and Barnabas parting ways in the Book of Acts. Church leaders say Wright has signed a “non-disparagement agreement” and he did not appear at the Wednesday meeting…
