Allison Guerriero, the researcher whose 2019 tip helped unravel one of the FBI’s most damaging counterintelligence scandals in decades, was found dead in her Boynton Beach apartment on Thursday, August 27, just hours after publishing dozens of posts online criticizing the bureau. Police were called to her apartment on the 1499 block of South Federal Highway after associates and family grew concerned, and officers arrived at 8:03 p.m. to find no initial signs of foul play, though the investigation remains open pending results from the medical examiner.
According to Newsweek, Boynton Beach Police confirmed the timeline and said they are awaiting the medical examiner’s findings before determining a cause of death. In the hours before she died, Guerriero posted roughly 75 messages and videos on X, urging the public to investigate unnamed federal officials and declaring in one post, “I hate the FBI,” per reporting cited by LAmag. Some of her videos showed her walking outside while voicing distrust of the bureau, the same reporting notes.
A Whistleblower’s Role in a Major FBI Corruption Case
Guerriero was not a bystander to the scandal that consumed her final years of public attention — she was central to how it began. She had an 18-month relationship with Charles McGonigal, who at the time served as Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s New York Field Office and supervised investigations into Russian oligarchs, according to LAmag’s account of the case. In October 2017, during that relationship, she observed a liquor-store bag stuffed with rubber-banded cash inside McGonigal’s Brooklyn apartment, which he told her was sports-betting winnings; federal prosecutors later linked that cash to an $80,000 payment from an Albanian operative, handed over in a parked car outside a restaurant, as detailed by Business Insider’s reporting.
After the affair ended in early 2019, Guerriero emailed the head of the FBI’s New York Field Office, detailing McGonigal’s secret international trips and undisclosed cash payments — a tip that, per LAmag, led to a sprawling investigation. She later said she sent the email in anger after discovering McGonigal was still married. Her intelligence eventually helped investigators uncover a broader conspiracy involving Russian oligarchs flying mistresses to Los Angeles to give birth to American children, LAmag reported.
McGonigal’s Fall and the Deripaska Connection
McGonigal was arrested in 2023 and later admitted to working secretly for Oleg Deripaska, the Russian oligarch and close associate of Vladimir Putin whom he had once worked to help get sanctions lifted in 2019. In 2021, after his FBI retirement, McGonigal took money from Deripaska to investigate a rival oligarch, according to the seed reporting.
