Bad News South Florida: Rising Food Costs, Second Worst Inflation in Nation

Our family joke used to involve avoiding Target stores because you can’t leave without being a few hundred dollars lighter – even if you only went in for one item. And Publix grocery stores aren’t known for their low prices.

It’s no longer funny. Reality is unavoidable and painful.

Stretching the same wage for less to survive is mentally draining. The ebb and flow of inflation forces us to accommodate the beast whether we like it or not.

A new WalletHub study of problematic inflation areas across the country pegged Southeast Florida high on the list.

“We’re seeing improvements as far as that inflation number goes. However, that can vary depending upon the area that you’re in,” Cassandra Happe, an analyst with WalletHub, told WPTV.

WalletHub compared 23 major MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) across two key metrics related to the Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation. They analyzed data from the Consumer Price Index for the latest month (for which BLS data is available two months prior and one year prior) to gauge inflation changes in the short and long term.
