Election 2024: Three attorneys seek to become county judge, replacing retiring Ted Booras

A Palm Beach County School District attorney and two former prosecutors now in private practice are seeking to succeed county Judge Ted Booras, who is retiring from the bench.

The nonpartisan vote for Palm Beach County Judge, Group 2 will be held during the Aug. 20 primary election.

Competing for Booras’ seat on the bench are Jean Marie Middleton, assistant general counsel for the school district, and private practice attorneys Lourdes Casanova and Douglas Leifert. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, then the top two will advance to the general election in November.

County judges in Florida preside over misdemeanor cases, traffic offenses and civil disputes of $50,000 or less. They are elected to six-year terms. Booras, a judge since 2006, announced in March that he is retiring at the end of his term.

Early voting for the primaries begins Aug. 10 and runs through Aug. 18 at 22 sites across Palm Beach County. For details, go line to the Supervisor of Elections website at votepalmbeach.gov .
