Broward County Man’s Dog Attacked by Coyote in Fenced Yard

Officers responded to a report of a dog being attacked by a coyote in Plantation, according to the most recent Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission weekly law enforcement report.

The dog owner stated that his pet sustained a gash and several small lacerations after a confrontation with a coyote in his fenced, 6-foot backyard. Interestingly, officers inspected the property and found no holes or gaps in the fencing that could have allowed the coyote to enter.

The dog was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment and the owner was also provided information on how to coexist safely with coyotes in the area.

Coyotes have become widespread in Florida, inhabiting every county across the state. Originally from the western United States, these adaptable animals have migrated eastward and now thrive in various environments, including rural, suburban, and even urban areas. They can live in forests, grasslands, and neighborhoods, often making dens in underbrush, storm drains, or human-made structures.
