Why are Big Lots stores closing in 2024? More Florida stores to shutter

Over the summer, Big Lots announced that it would be closing up to 40 of its stores across the country. That number jumped up into the hundreds only a little while later, when the retailer added even more stores to the list in August .

“In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges, including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers,” the financial disclosure from Big Lots said.

Now, Jacksonville Beach’s only Big Lots will be closing its doors soon. More than 20 stores of Florida’s 106 Big Lots locations were already set to close and more Florida closures for Jacksonville Beach, Delray Beach and Pembroke Pines were listed in a court filing in September.

Big Lots’ sales dropped 10.2% between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024, equating to a loss of about $114.5 million, the company said in its filing.
