Pedestrian, 64, struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in WPB

WEST PALM BEACH — A 64-year-old homeless man was struck and killed Saturday night by a hit-and-run driver near a city intersection, police said Sunday.

West Palm Beach Police spokesman Michael Jachles said officers received a call at 7:33 p.m. Saturday about a man lying in the street on Broadway, just south of 32 nd Street. Officers attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful. City Fire Department rescue workers arriving on the scene pronounced the man dead, Jachles said.

Investigators determined that the man had been struck by a vehicle heading south on Broadway, and believe the pedestrian had been crossing from east to west when he was struck. The southbound lanes of Broadway were closed for a time as officers began their investigation and canvassed the area, Jachles said.

Jachles did not disclose the man’s name, saying next of kin had not yet been located, but that the man was believed to be homeless.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver responsible. City police can be reached at 561-822-1900, or an anonymous tip can be directed to Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS, or by visiting crimestopperspbc.com.
