Authorities in South Palm Beach County have apprehended a Fort Lauderdale man accused of executing a series of scams targeting the elderly. Wilkens Eugene, detained in one of the scams when he appeared at a victim’s home, is currently facing multiple charges that include grand theft and computer fraud, as reported by BocaNewsNow.
The first scam, exposed to authorities between March 27 and last Thursday, involved Eugene allegedly convincing an elderly woman she was aiding PayPal in an investigation by handing over sizable amounts of money. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), the woman was instructed to download a control application on her phone, providing the scammers with access to her bank accounts. She ultimately handed over $42,000 before suspecting foul play and contacting the police.
In an even more elaborate ruse outlined by WPBF, another victim in South Palm Beach lost $18,000 after scammers, including Eugene, impersonated FBI agents and bank officials. The victim believed she was under investigation for money laundering and was coerced to withdraw cash for “protection,” only to hand it over to the impostors…
