Conservation group fighting to save manatees from starvation

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WWSB) – A Florida non-profit called “Bear Warriors United,” said one of its main goals is to stop manatees in the Sunshine state from starvation.

The organization focuses on protecting and educating the public on such matters as Florida’s black bears, manatees, and other forms of wildlife habitat and corridors. Earlier this month, a Florida judge ruled in favor of Bear Warriors United and against the state finding Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection was “In violation of the endangered species act.”

This, after a multi-month investigation revealed Florida’s Indian River Lagoon, stretching from Palm Beach County to Daytona Beach where manatees come for the warm waters, and to feed, had been polluted by toxins released from nearby septic tanks, and water treatment facilities. That resulted in the sea grass they need to survive being destroyed…
