Former Palm Beach resident Maria “Mia” Matthews — the ex-wife of former Palm House hotel developer and convicted felon Robert “Bob” V. Matthews — has been sentenced in Connecticut for federal tax evasion to a year’s probation and a $6,000 fine.
She had pleaded guilty in 2019 after being charged in 2018 with a single count of tax evasion. Mia Mathews, 58, and her then-husband evaded at least $2.75 million in taxes, penalties and interest for the years 2005 and 2007, according to a pre-sentence report cited by prosecutors.
Her sentencing came as Bob Matthews, 67, serves a 65-month sentence in a federal Pensacola prison after pleading guilty to crimes, including tax evasion, in a fraud case related to his failed efforts to renovate and reopen the Palm House property at 160 Royal Palm Way in Palm Beach…
