Fort Lauderdale Police Search for Suspect Following Shooting as Community Leader “Big Mama” Calls for Unity

Fort Lauderdale police are on the lookout for a gunman following a shooting incident yesterday, as authorities responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 6:40 p.m. in the vicinity of the 800 block of Northwest 22nd Road. A victim, found suffering from a gunshot wound, was transported by paramedics to Broward Health, NBC Miami reported. Witnesses recount a heated exchange between two men, allegedly over money matters, that escalated seconds before shots rang out.

Operating down the street from the incident, Essie Reed, a figure known as “Big Mama” in the community for her philanthropic work, expressed her deep concern. While fighting back the disturbance the shooting made in the neighborhood she holds dear, “The shooting down on Mama’s Street? That bothers me. I don’t rest,” Reed told NBC Miami.

Local 10 News covered Reed’s heartfelt appeal, highlighting her role as a mentor and organizer of toy and food drives. “L-o-v-e, love,” she said, calling for peace among the young people. “I ask my young people, stop. This is your Big Mama. We need you. Every family needs each other.”…
