Motorcyclist killed after driver fails to spot bike in fatal collision: PBSO report

LANTANA, Fla. (CBS12) — A traffic collision claimed the life of a 39-year-old motorcyclist Tuesday evening in Lantana.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said the crash occurred around 6:50 p.m., near 6200 South Congress Avenue, near the entrance to Atlantis Plaza. Investigators report that a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500, driven by a 50-year-old man from Stuart, was travelling southbound and attempted a left turn into the plaza. At the same time, a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, operated by Joshua R. Rene, 39, of Lantana, was heading northbound in the outside lane.

The PBSO report indicates that the driver of the GMC failed to identify the approaching motorcycle and turned directly into its path. The GMC struck the Harley-Davidson, causing Rene to be ejected from his bike. He landed in the northbound lane, suffering fatal injuries. Despite wearing a helmet, Rene was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:57 p.m. His next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the GMC was uninjured in the crash. There are no traffic controls at the T-intersection where the collision occurred, according to the PBSO report…
