Florida golf club to install cell tower disguised as 100-foot pine tree

BOCA RATON — A Verizon cell phone tower will soon be coming to the Polo Club of Boca Raton, but you will need excellent eyesight to see it. And even then, it won’t be easy to spot.

That is because it will be hidden inside a 100-foot-tall fake tree designed to look like a Florida Slash Pine, covered with fake leaves to conceal it. It is called a “stealth tower,” designed to blend into its surroundings and reduce visual impact.

Stealth cell towers, which are becoming increasingly popular in Florida, are often disguised as flagpoles, clocktowers or other structures to minimize the visual impact on the landscape. In the case of Polo Club — an exclusive country club home to two 18-hole golf courses — it chose a pine tree. Efforts to obtain a comment from the country club were unsuccessful…
