Late-Night Brightline Death On Andrews Avenue Rattles Fort Lauderdale

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Brightline train early Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, adding another tragedy to the busy rail corridor that cuts through the city. The collision happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 700 block of North Andrews Avenue, and officers arriving at the scene found the person already deceased. The train later resumed service after the site was cleared.

According to WPLG Local 10, Fort Lauderdale police have not said what may have led to the crash, and investigators are still working the case. The outlet reports that Brightline operations were restored once the investigation and cleanup at the crossing were completed.

Brightline’s Safety Record And The Bigger Picture

A joint investigation by the Miami Herald and public-radio partner WLRN has tracked nearly 200 deaths along Brightline’s Florida corridor and raised alarms about missing gates and barriers, quiet zones and other weak spots in crossing protections. WLRN reports that these recurring issues are a key reason local officials and federal regulators have elevated safety upgrades to a top priority.

Local Planning And Federal Safety Funding

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization’s 2025 annual report highlights a Fort Lauderdale roadway-rail underpass feasibility study that lists Andrews Avenue among five high-priority crossings for potential grade separation. The Broward MPO also played a role in securing federal dollars for corridor improvements. Brightline says it received a CRISI grant of about $1.65 million to develop an AI-powered trespass-monitoring system, according to a company press release. Brightline has held up those investments as part of a wider push to improve safety along its tracks.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Fort Lauderdale police have not released the victim’s identity or said how the person ended up on the tracks, and investigators told reporters their probe remains active. WPLG Local 10 notes that authorities have not offered additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision…
