Singer Island Dive Turns Deadly After Boat Washes Ashore

A day on the water off Singer Island ended in tragedy when a missing diver was found dead near a popular wreck site after his boat washed ashore, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The man was discovered at an offshore barge-wreck diving spot, where he was found against a pile of rocks. A bystander pulled him from the water, brought him to shore and then called 911. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating what went wrong.

According to WPBF 25 News, the vessel washed ashore before the diver was located at the barge-wreck site. The station reports that his body was found against a pile of rocks at the dive spot and that investigators responded to the scene, citing information from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Wrecks And Currents Near Singer Island

Singer Island sits beside a chain of artificial reefs and historic wrecks that pull in both shore and boat divers, but the area is close to the Gulf Stream, so conditions can change fast. As detailed by Divernet, local operators run drift dives past wrecks such as the Ana Cecilia, Mizpah and Amaryllis. Shifting currents and scattered debris fields can complicate searches and recoveries, which helps explain why even seasoned divers sometimes get into serious trouble at these sites.

Rip Currents And Safety

Rip currents and unpredictable surf add another layer of risk along the Palm Beach coastline, especially near inlets and wrecks. The National Weather Service advises swimmers and beachgoers to float or tread water, then swim parallel to shore to escape a rip, and to stay close to a lifeguard when possible, since fighting a rip can quickly exhaust even strong swimmers. Those same guidelines matter for divers who surface near beaches or are trying to get back to a boat in heavy current. Checking local marine and surf conditions before heading out is a basic but critical step.

Investigation Underway

Authorities, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard, have opened an investigation but have not released the diver’s name or a cause of death, according to WPBF 25 News. Officials have not said whether foul play is suspected as they work to piece together the timeline of events. Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement…
