Roaches, rodent droppings, flies: Five Palm Beach County restaurants temporarily closed

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Roaches in kitchens, rodent droppings near food equipment, and dozens of flies around bar and dish areas were among the worst problems cited in recent state inspections that temporarily shut down five Palm Beach County restaurants.

Inspectors documented live roaches at multiple locations, more than 43 rodent droppings at one Delray Beach pub, and about 35 live flies at a Palm Beach Gardens restaurant, along with several food-safety and employee hygiene violations.

China Town at The Gardens Mall was ordered shut on March 19 after inspectors found eight violations, including three high-priority issues. Among the problems were about eight live roaches found on the floor next to the deep fryer, in cabinets under a hand-washing sink, and on the floor in front of the front counter. Inspectors also found about 16 dead roaches under the hand-washing sink in a cabinet.

The inspection report also cited employee hygiene and cross-contamination concerns. One employee handled a trash can and then, without washing hands, handled a container of shrimp. In another case, an employee used a metal bowl for raw shrimp, rinsed it with water, and then reused it for cut vegetables without sanitizing it.
