Meridian police are rolling out a citywide push to address the growing presence of e-bikes and e-motorcycles on neighborhood streets, parks and pathways, with a focus on education, safety and accountability.
A key part of the initiative is clarifying what qualifies as an e-bike under Meridian city code. An e-bike must have factory-installed pedals, a motor under 750 watts and a top speed under 30 miles an hour. E-bikes are allowed on roads, parks, pathways and sidewalks.
E-motorcycles are treated differently. Vehicles without pedals that have more power and higher top speeds are considered motor vehicles. That means riders must be licensed and the vehicle must be titled, registered and insured. E-motorcycles are not allowed on sidewalks, pathways or in parks…
