Speeding, running red lights and distracted drivers are a hot topic in Boise, but data shows the Boise Police Department is writing fewer tickets than ever. Before COVID-19 hit Idaho, BPD wrote an average of 20,975 traffic tickets per year between 2017 and 2019 as the Treasure Valley’s population climbed. The number hit a high of 23,450 in 2018, which translated to 1,025 tickets per 10,000 residents in the City of Boise, according to data obtained through the Idaho Public Records Act. The number dropped slightly in 2020 and again in 2021 before taking a steep drop by several thousand in 2022 with only 11,051 tickets written that year. When compared to the city’s population, this translated to a low of 467 tickets per 10,000 residents.
