It was almost unheard of not too long ago for a former No. 1 overall recruit to transfer. But it’s becoming the new normal in today’s college football world.
Players are hitting the transfer portal for all sorts of reasons, whether they’re looking for more playing time immediately or chasing more money through NIL deals.
On Thursday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Boise State quarterback Malachi Nelson, the former class of 2023’s No. 1 overall recruit (ESPN 300), plans to enter the portal.
Nelson began his college career at USC, where he spent one season. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound quarterback saw limited action with the Trojans, appearing in just one game and completing 1-of-3 passes for zero yards.
Nelson then transferred to Boise State last offseason with hopes of winning the starting job. However, he came up short against Maddux Madsen in the quarterback competition.
Madsen, along with star running back Ashton Jeanty, have led the Broncos (12-1) to a Mountain West Championship and a College Football Playoff berth.
