BOISE — As of Boise State coach Leon Rice’s postgame press conference Saturday afternoon, Bronco point guard Alvaro Cardenas did not hold the school record for assists in a game. But that could be coming following a stats review.
Cardenas was marked down as having 12 assists in Boise State’s 77-59 win against Air Force in the Mountain West opener, one shy of the Boise State record of 13 assist in a game, set by Bryan Defares against UNLV in 2004. But Rice said after the game he believes Cardenas was shorted one on the official stats.
“They had him down for 12 assists, we had him for 13, which would tie the school record,” said Rice. “So, there will be an inquiry.”
Regardless if Cardenas officially gets credited for another assist or not, he took over the game for the Broncos (9-3, 1-0 Mountain West). The San Jose State transfer had his first double-double at Boise State, scoring 15 points to go with his, as of now, 12 assists.
“Good googly moogly, this guy is just crazy,” said O’Mar StanLey, who scored 15 points and was on the receiving end of three alley-oop passes from Cardenas. “I said earlier in the summer, he’s probably one of the best point guards in the nation. He makes our job easy.”
