Former Oregon State and Boise State gymnast Hailey Okula, a prominent nursing influencer, died last week after giving birth to her son, Crew. She was 33.
Okula went into cardiac arrest after giving birth via C-section on March 29. Her husband, Matthew, told local news outlets in Los Angeles that the cardiac arrest was due to an extremely rare complication known as amniotic fluid embolism. Their son survived.
“Hailey’s strength was unparalleled,” Matthew Okula wrote in an Instagram post announcing his wife’s passing. “Words can’t describe how badly we wanted to be parents. After years of infertility struggles and a long, challenging IVF process, we were overjoyed to be expecting Crew.
