Boise Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer announced his retirement earlier this month, bringing to a close a decades-long career in both firefighting and EMS.
In an interview with the Idaho Press on the trajectory of his career, Niemeyer, who is retiring on Nov. 30 at 57, said that he did not have a sense when he was young of what he wanted to do professionally. Rather than speaking to a childhood moment that inspired him or an early call to public service, Niemeyer said he simply wanted to do something different from the rest of his family — teaching wasn’t his thing.
Niemeyer said that his dad, brother, sister and sister-in-law were all in the education field at various levels, a trend he was definitively looking to depart from as a student at Central Washington University…
