STAR, Idaho (CBS2) — Swimmer’s itch reported in Freedom Park ponds in Star.

Swimmer’s itch is caused by the penetration of the larval stage of certain flatworms that can be picked up while swimming, according to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. “The site of the penetration in humans is apparent by a small red welt.” The degree of discomfort and an individual’s reaction to it depend on the degree of infestation and their sensitivity.

IDEQ says the reaction to Swimmer’s Itch ranges from hardly noticeable to considerable pain, fever, and severe itching and swelling. The organisms that cause Swimmer’s itch are most common in early summer…
