Pelota at Jaialdi: An Ancient Sport with Deep Roots in Boise

Boise, ID (CBS2) — As Jaialdi 2025 brings thousands to downtown Boise, one of the oldest sports in Basque tradition is once again taking center stage — pelota. Played on a court known as a fronton, the centuries-old game remains a living link between Idaho’s Basque immigrants and their homeland.

Tucked behind the historic Anduiza Hotel on Grove Street is Boise’s only remaining fronton, where the city’s first pelota match was recorded in 1915. Inside, the game continues — with regular leagues for men, women, and youth.

“Some people love playing it and teach someone else new,” said Michael Lejardi, a longtime player. “A lot of this is passed-down knowledge from those who came before us.”…
