Funding concerns could make animal care in Canyon County more difficult

CALDWELL, Idaho (CBS2) — The West Valley Humane Society (WVHS) has canceled its contracts with Canyon County, Caldwell, and Nampa unless its request for more funding is granted. After not seeing any “meaningful” funding increases in over a decade, they are asking for a joint service agreement of $1.5 million split amongst the three municipalities.

“We’re just hoping we can all come to the table and create a lifelong, lasting solution for their sheltering needs, as well as keep our doors open,” said Nicole Criner, the vice president of the board of directors for WVHS.

WVHS is asking the City of Caldwell to increase their spending from $63,000 to $540,000 and the City of Nampa to increase its spending from $83,000 to $720,000. They say rising costs and an increased population are putting a strain on the shelter, and the amount being asked for is the minimum required to continue to operate…
