Growing Idaho: Can parks keep up with growth?

BOISE, Idaho — The Gem State is undergoing incredible growth. With that, comes the risk of at least one thing shrinking, the amount of parks and open space. But local leaders say municipalities can work against that.

Doug Holloway is the Boise Parks and Rec Director. He’s retiring after decades of service and that time has taught him how much people in Boise love their parks. But as the city continues its incredible growth, keeping the parks growing along with Boise’s population will be tough.

“That is always going to be a challenge, because Boise is the place to be,” says Holloway. “People want to live here. And part of the reason why they want to live here is because of our world class Park and Recreation system, right? That quality of life, people are looking for that. They just don’t need a high paying job, they need quality education, they need quality health care. They need a clean city, a safe city, but they need a city that has recreational and open space opportunities.”…
