Exploring Idaho: A tour of the Oregon Trail through Idaho

GLENNS FERRY, Idaho — More than 500 miles of the historic Oregon Trail cuts through Southern Idaho. The most dangerous crossing along the route is a section of the Snake River in Glenns Ferry.

Weather and fast-moving water posed many challenges for settlers, said Kevin Fossen, ranger at Three Island Crossing State Park.

“What made it so treacherous was just the amount of water passing through, trying to get your wagon across,” Fossen said. “If they didn’t decide to cross here, hot, dry conditions were on the other side.”…
