City of Caldwell grappling with implementation of possible railroad quiet zone

The sound of train horns in Caldwell’s central area along seven railroad crossings that range from 5th Avenue to Ustick Road could soon go away as city officials are in the final stages of implementing a quiet zone with a contractor’s under-budget bid for required safety improvements.

The city was scheduled to hold a special workshop session on Jan. 27 for public comment regarding the quiet zones but postponed it a week before, stating a later date would be announced.

According to federal regulations, a quiet zone is a designated section of a rail line where train engineers are not required to routinely sound horns. Regulations require that a quiet zone area must have one or more crossings and be at least half a mile in length…
