Interfaith Sanctuary closes a decades-long chapter downtown, opens new doors to a larger shelter despite years of hurdles

BOISE, Idaho — After more than two decades, Interfaith Sanctuary’s emergency shelter on River Street in Boise is without any guests, not because the need went away, but because the demand for something more grew too big to ignore.

As of Thursday, March 5, the organization officially closed the River Street shelter and completed its move into a newly built, 24-hour facility at 4306 W. State St., a space four times the size of the warehouse that served as Boise’s primary low-barrier emergency shelter since 2005.
