Ada Co. grapples with shooting range appeal, new sound study

Following several hours of public testimony, the fate of a shooting range in the Ada County foothills remains uncertain.

The Ada County Board of County Commissioners opted to table a decision on the appeal of a conditional use permit for a shooting range in the Ada County foothills until the board’s meeting on April 7. Commissioner Tom Dayley said the board’s move will buy the commissioners some time to digest the information and testimony presented at the hearing on March 11, as well as information presented to the county’s planning and zoning commission, which voted 4-3 to grant the conditional use permit for the range in the fall.

Tabling also gives the commissioners time to seek advice from their legal counsel on two matters: due process concerns raised by those appealing the permit over a new sound study presented during the hearing that the appellants said they did not have a chance to review; and whether the board of county commissioners is allowed legally to restrict noise from the development under the conditional use permit further than what is specified in state code…
