Commercial Tire founder dies. He grew it from one Boise location to dozens

John R. “Bob” Schwenkfelder died this weekend. He was 81.

Schwenkfelder opened his first tire store in 1968 at 1122 W. State St. in Boise, dubbing it Commercial Tire. Today, the Meridian-based company has 54 stores across four states and is owned by its employees.

“Bob built more than a company — he built opportunity,” said company president Trent Schwenkfelder, who is Bob’s son. “He believed that if you took care of your employees and your customers, everything else would follow. He lived that every single day, and it’s the standard we’ll hold ourselves to going forward.”…
