Doctor sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison for fraud scheme that financed $2.1 million Brookline home

A former Brookline sleep doctor who used proceeds from a healthcare fraud scheme to purchase a multimillion-dollar home in Fisher Hill was sentenced Friday to 58 months in federal prison.

Pankaj Merchia, 52, of Brookline and Boca Raton, Florida, was also ordered to pay $1.85 million in restitution and serve three years of supervised release following his prison term after a federal jury in Boston convicted him in January of healthcare fraud, money laundering and tax offenses.
