Newbury Street Sanctuary Set To Shut After 32 Years In Back Bay

G2O Spa + Salon, the Back Bay day spa credited with helping define Newbury Street’s wellness scene, is set to close permanently on Sunday, August 30, 2026, after 32 years in business. The owner says the wind down will affect roughly 78 employees, who were notified in early July as the company prepares to wrap up operations. Regular clients and staff are now working through final bookings, refunds and gift card redemptions as the business gets ready to shutter for good. The announcement has already stirred debate about how recent street changes and shifting retail patterns are reshaping the Back Bay.

As reported by Boston Business Journal, founder Joyce Hampers said “street closures and expanded bus and bike lanes have made it harder for suburban customers to reach the location.” The Business Journal’s story said the company will cease operations on Aug. 30 and expects about 78 workers to be laid off.

At the same time, local retail coverage notes that Newbury Street has stayed commercially busy, with new flagship openings and low vacancy rates reported by Boston Magazine.

G2O posted an “End of an Era” message on its site thanking clients and staff and urging patrons to book appointments or use memberships, points and gift cards before the final day, the company said on G2O Spa + Salon. The message frames the closure as a business decision after decades in the Back Bay and directs customers to a Closing FAQs page that covers specifics on refunds and memberships…
