Boston Loses More Residents Than Any City in Massachusetts as Housing Costs Push People Out

New data from U-Haul is giving moving experts insight about traffic patterns into and out of Boston. Among all the communities in Massachusetts, Boston saw the largest population decline, dropping by 1,338 residents to 672,973, part of a 5,644-resident net decrease from 2020 to 2024.

The finding comes via the U-Haul 2026 Midyear Migration Trends national and metro reports released on Wednesday, July 30. The report tracks one-way truck, trailer, and U-Box rentals from July 2025 through June 2026 to map where movers are going, by generation.

For the Boston market, the report lists each generation’s top “net-gain” destinations outside of Massachusetts. They’re where U-Haul customers from the Boston area are most often ending up, noted Boston.com…
