‘They’ve taken over’: As town wrestles with rats, one neighborhood is losing hope

Brookline has rats. That much is indisputable. But for a group of residents living around Linden Park in Brookline Village, the rodents have become more than an occasional urban nuisance.

“They’ve taken over,” said Andrea Loew, 68, who grew up on Linden Street and still lives there today.

Residents in the neighborhood say they avoid sitting on their porches after dark and hesitate before walking outside to their cars, much less spending time in the park. They’ve spotted droppings in a sandbox. One resident said she can see as many as two dozen rats within 20 minutes of being outside around dusk. Others have had rats chew through wiring in their cars and have installed devices intended to keep the animals away…
